Rapper A$AP Rocky, officially known as Rakim Mayers, was acquitted of two felony assault charges related to a 2021 incident involving a semiautomatic firearm and his former friend and bandmate. The verdict followed allegations that he had shot at his friend during a heated argument.
The 36-year-old artist embraced his supporters and legal team with relief following the favorable verdict. The scene in the Los Angeles Superior Court was filled with loud cheers from the attending supporters, capturing the charged atmosphere at the announcement.
Standing outside the courthouse, Rocky expressed gratitude to God and the jury for their decision, emphasizing his appreciation for being a free man. “Were blessed to be here right now,” he shared with the press and supporters.
The prosecution portrayed Mayers as an aggressor in the three-week trial, accusing him of shooting rapper Terell Ephron, his childhood friend, amid a feud. While Mayers faced a potential 24-year prison sentence, prosecutors were pushing for an 8-year term.
Mayers’ defense maintained that Ephron, known as A$AP Relli, harbored envy towards Rocky and instigated the conflict, attacking Rocky twice. Attorney Joe Tacopina argued Rocky only had a prop gun for self-defense and fired to fend off Ephron’s aggression.
Mayers’ partner, Rihanna, was a steadfast presence in the courtroom, attending with their children and underscoring her support during the trial proceedings.
Firmly believing in his innocence, Rocky rejected a plea deal that guaranteed no jail time and opted not to testify. “I want my right not to testify,” he asserted before the judge.
Post-verdict, Rocky’s attorney, Chad Seigel, thanked the jury for recognizing the defense’s arguments. “They saw through this mirage of a case,” he stated emphatically.
Defense lawyer Joe Tacopina highlighted the lack of concrete evidence, suggesting there was no definitive proof of a shooting. The case hinged on whether the gun was real or fake.
Current LA County District Attorney Nathan Hochman stood by the prosecution’s effort, underscoring that fame doesn’t exempt one from legal scrutiny. “Our office remains committed to accountability,” he confirmed.
The alleged shooting occurred near a Hollywood hotel where both Mayers and Ephron met to resolve tensions. Prosecutors claimed Mayers brandished a pistol during the confrontation and threatened Ephron.
Ephron testified that he was targeted by Mayers who shot twice in his direction. However, others labeled the gun as merely a prop, citing past incidents as reasons for Rocky’s precautionary measures.
The court’s ruling was met with support from Mayers’ fanbase, who gathered outside the courthouse to celebrate. “He’s got a lot of fans,” stated defense attorney Tacopina, attributing this loyalty to Rocky’s personal character drawn from the case’s outcome.
