Atletico Madrid’s ambitions for the La Liga championship took a hit as they were forced to settle for a draw against Espanyol. Veteran player Cesar Azpilicueta, who joined from Chelsea in 2023, scored his debut goal for Atletico in spectacular fashion, striking a breathtaking volley from 25 yards into the top corner. However, the game, which lacked many scoring opportunities, turned when Atletico handed Espanyol a lifeline with 20 minutes left. Clement Lenglet conceded a penalty after bringing down Leandro Cabrera in the box. Javi Puado capitalized on this opportunity, scoring from the spot with Espanyol’s first shot on target against Jan Oblak. In their quest for a late victory, Atletico nearly succeeded with an attempt from former Manchester City striker Julian Alvarez, whose shot narrowly missed the mark from just inside the penalty area.

Atletico’s winless streak in the league now extends to three matches, placing them six points behind the leaders, Barcelona, and three points adrift of Real Madrid, who have played one fewer game. Meanwhile, Espanyol holds onto 15th place, standing two points above the relegation zone.
