Bayern Munich showcased their tactical prowess and defensive strength to progress into the Champions League quarter-finals, triumphing 2-0 over Bayer Leverkusen in the second leg of their Round of 16 encounter.

Having already secured a 3-0 victory in the first leg, Bayern proved their superiority at the BayArena in front of 30,210 eager fans. Goals from Harry Kane in the 52nd minute and Alphonso Davies in the 71st minute underscored Bayern’s commanding presence. With an eight-point lead over the reigning Bundesliga champions, Bayern demonstrated to Leverkusen the chasm between them in class. Across both fixtures, Bayern delivered an imposing performance.

Bayern will now face Inter Milan in the quarter-finals on April 9 and 16. Inter emerged victorious against Feyenoord Rotterdam, securing a 2-1 win, having also won their first leg 2-0. The first match of this next thrilling encounter is scheduled in Munich.

Leverkusen’s coach, Xabi Alonso, opted to start with an out-and-out striker, positioning Patrik Schick at the forefront. He trusted Lukas Hradecky in goal, after Matej Kovar’s errors in the previous match. Despite Florian Wirtz’s absence due to an ankle injury, Bayern’s coach Vincent Kompany managed to field nearly his strongest lineup, with Jonas Urbig stepping in for the injured Manuel Neuer.

As anticipated, Leverkusen, burdened with a 0-3 deficit, initiated the match with urgency, pressing high and challenging Bayern aggressively from the outset. It took only minutes for the first clash, as Exequiel Palacios tangled with Kingsley Coman.

Bayern’s composure was palpable, as they quickly created their first major opportunity. Jamal Musiala dazzled on the right wing, but Harry Kane’s close-range effort was thwarted by Hradecky, just as Jonathan Tah pressured him. The game’s intensity was evident, with Konrad Laimer and Coman receiving early bookings from Slovenian referee Slavko Vinčić. Bayern was clearly up for the challenge.

Bayern had the upper hand in creating opportunities, despite Leverkusen’s relentless attacks. Kane’s long-range shot and Michael Olise’s near miss highlighted their threat. Leverkusen was forced into errors, with Tah losing the ball in attack, though Musiala couldn’t capitalize on the break. Even Coman, within six yards, narrowly missed the target.

It wasn’t until just before halftime that Leverkusen fashioned a notable chance, as Schick’s header from a corner struck only the outer net. Although their play was fervent, Leverkusen lacked true dominance and scoring chances. The first half concluded scoreless.

Whatever plans Leverkusen intended for the second half quickly unraveled. In the 52nd minute, Joshua Kimmich delivered an exquisite free-kick into the box, leading to Schick’s unfortunate miss and Kane capitalizing on the chaos to score.

Leverkusen continued their efforts earnestly, but Bayern’s defense held firm. Even when shots headed towards the goal, like Jeremie Frimpong’s and Schick’s attempts in the 65th minute, Urbig was well-positioned to save. This moment highlighted Leverkusen’s best phase of play.

Bayern responded in their signature style, clinching a 2-0 lead. Serge Gnabry chased down a long ball deep in Leverkusen’s half, passing to Kimmich and Kane, before Davies deftly slotted the ball into the net.

The goal cemented Bayern’s victory, and their dominance might have been even greater if not for missed opportunities. Musiala struck the crossbar in the 81st minute and narrowly hit the post shortly after.
