CHICAGO – To strengthen their offensive line and enhance protection for quarterback Caleb Williams, the Bears have agreed to a trade, sending a 2026 fourth-round pick to the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for two-time All-Pro guard Joe Thuney, an insider informed ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Wednesday. This marks the second move by the Bears in the past day aimed at reinforcing their offensive front. However, these trades will only become official when the NFL’s new league year begins on March 12.
Thuney stands out as a key figure on the Chiefs, earning MVP accolades from his teammates last season, clinching the Derrick Thomas Award for his exceptional sacrifice and versatility, especially after he switched to left tackle towards the season’s close. Across his impressive nine-season NFL journey with the New England Patriots and the Chiefs, Thuney has been remarkably durable, missing only two games, and has started in 146 matchups.
In 2024, Thuney played 895 snaps at left guard before transitioning to left tackle, where he adeptly safeguarded Patrick Mahomes’ blind side during Kansas City’s pursuit of a Super Bowl LIX victory. Boasting the highest pass block win rate in the league at 97.8% over the past two seasons, Thuney has consistently demonstrated elite performance, earning his third consecutive Pro Bowl selection in 2024. As he enters the final year of a substantial five-year, $80 million contract he secured with the Chiefs in 2021, Thuney is set to earn $16 million this season.
