United States joins countries like Mexico, Colombia, and Spain in celebrating Mother’s Day this Sunday, May 11. Both the U.S. and Colombia honor mothers on the second Sunday of May, falling on May 11 in 2025. Interestingly, this annual celebration shifts from year to year.

But where does this cherished tradition stem from? In the modern era, Mother’s Day began in May 1907 when Anna Jarvis decided to honor her late mother, Anne Reeves Jarvis, in a Methodist church in West Virginia. Her efforts led to the first formal Mother’s Day in the United States. Finally, in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson cemented its significance by passing a bill to declare it a national holiday.
