Chromecast 2nd Gen and Audio Facing Connectivity Issues

Owners of the Chromecast 2nd generation and Chromecast Audio are currently experiencing difficulties with casting audio or video content.

Users report encountering an “Untrusted device: [name] couldn’t be verified. This could be caused by outdated device firmware” message in apps like YouTube. This message appears after selecting these devices as the target for casting.

Unfortunately, users have no option but to “close” this dialog box. There are no available workarounds, such as reboots or resets, that might resolve this connectivity issue. Despite this, the screensaver functionality, which displays Google Photos, art, and the weather, continues to operate normally.

Interestingly, newer Chromecast models, such as the 3rd generation and Ultra, appear unaffected by this problem today.

The “Untrusted device” warning has led some users to worry that Google might have intentionally disabled their Chromecasts or is indicating the end of support for these devices.

However, it is more likely that a bug is the culprit. Google has not issued any announcements regarding the discontinuation of support for these models, unlike what they did for the original Chromecast (1st gen) back in May 2023. Notably, that first-generation device remains functional, even now.

Hopefully, Google will provide a server-side fix promptly.

Released during the same event in September 2015, the Chromecast 2nd gen and Chromecast Audio are among Google’s oldest streaming hardware, both running on 1.56.x firmware.
