The Washington Commanders have been actively exploring trade possibilities for their defensive tackle, Jonathan Allen. General Manager Adam Peters indicated last week that they are weighing all potential options. In reality, it seems their choices have narrowed down to two, probably the only serious considerations all along. Regardless, it appears certain that Allen will not be returning to Washington.
According to a report by Michael Silver from TheAthletic.com on Wednesday, the Commanders plan to release Allen to alleviate financial burdens if they don’t secure a trade agreement. The two-time Pro Bowler carries a significant cap hit of $22.3 million by 2025, but a trade or release before June 1 could liberate $16.3 million in cap space for the team. Allen’s base salary stands at $15.5 million, with none of that guaranteed, adding further complexity to the situation.
John Keim of ESPN previously reported that the Seattle Seahawks expressed interest in Allen before the 2023 trade deadline, although that was prior to their coaching changes. Now 30 years old, Allen missed nine games in 2024 due to a torn left pectoral muscle. Despite undergoing surgery, he managed to return for the last two regular-season games and participated in three postseason matchups. Over his eight-year career, Allen has amassed 42 sacks in 108 starts. The Commanders originally drafted Allen with the 17th overall pick in 2017, marking the beginning of his professional journey.
