Cruz Azul's Sole Victory Over Mazatlán: A Historic Match Revisited

Cruz Azul’s only away victory against Mazatlán occurred on September 19, 2020, during Matchday 11 of the Apertura 2020. This match was particularly noteworthy as it took place during Mazatlán’s debut season in Liga MX. Since joining the Mexican Primera División, Mazatlán has faced Cruz Azul several times, but the latter has triumphed only once at the now-called Estadio El Encanto, which happened in the Apertura 2020.

In that memorable game, Cruz Azul, under the guidance of Robert Dante Siboldi, clinched a 2-3 win thanks to goals from Santiago Gimenez and Jonathan Rodríguez, the latter finishing the night with a remarkable double. Just a minute into the game, Camilo Sanvezzo scored for the hosts, giving Mazatlán an early lead. However, Santiago Gimenez equalized in the 15th minute. With the score tied at 1-1, both teams went into halftime. In the second half, Jonathan Rodríguez took center stage by scoring twice through penalties, beating Sebastián Sosa both times. Although Mario Osuna managed to net a goal for Mazatlán during stoppage time, it wasn’t enough to prevent Cruz Azul from taking home the three points.

Jonathan Rodríguez and Santiago Gimenez both departed from Cruz Azul in 2022, a year after being integral to the team’s victory in the Clausura 2021. ‘Cabecita’ Rodríguez left in January for a new opportunity with Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, while Gimenez moved to join Feyenoord in the Netherlands during the summer transfer window.
