A Delta flight experienced a crash landing at Toronto Pearson International Airport on Monday, resulting in the aircraft lying upside down on the snow-laden ground. According to an update from airport officials that evening, at least 18 passengers were transported to hospitals. Peel Regional Paramedic Services confirmed that none of these injuries are life-threatening. However, three individuals sustained critical injuries—a child, a man in his 60s, and a woman in her 40s—as reported by Ornge, an agency specializing in medical transportation. The child was sent to the Hospital for Sick Children and is in stable condition, the hospital stated Monday night. All 76 passengers, along with four crew members aboard Flight 4819, were safely evacuated following the accident involving a single plane, as confirmed by both Delta and the Federal Aviation Administration. Among the travelers, 22 were Canadian citizens, noted Flint. The flight had departed from Minneapolis.
The accident took place around 2:15 p.m. ET on Monday, according to Delta. In response to the crash, Toronto Airport temporarily halted flights, but departures and arrivals resumed by 5 p.m. ET the same day, according to airport statements. Two runways remain out of service, which may affect airport operations, Flint added. Although the cause of the crash is yet to be determined, it occurred during intense weather conditions with blowing snow and strong wind gusts affecting the region. Wind speeds reached 40 mph at ground level and were even stronger at higher altitudes.
