The Philadelphia Eagles have made the unexpected choice to part ways with cornerback Darius Slay, as reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Slay, who has been a key player for the Eagles over five seasons, finds himself released just after the team triumphed in Super Bowl LIX. By releasing Slay post-June 1, the Eagles will save $4.3 million against the cap. While Slay had expressed a desire to remain with the team for at least another year, he acknowledged that the business aspect of football might prevent that from happening. His premonition proved accurate, as the decision appears driven by financial considerations.

During a candid discussion on the St. Brown Podcast, the six-time Pro Bowler mentioned that if he couldn’t stay with the Eagles, he would be open to returning to the Detroit Lions, where he spent the first seven seasons of his career. As Slay enters the next chapter, the Lions could indeed be a potential landing spot. In the last season, Slay recorded an impressive 49 tackles, 39 of which were solo efforts. He also managed to force a fumble and recover another. Throughout four playoff appearances, Slay made 14 tackles and secured an interception during the thrilling wild-card matchup against the Green Bay Packers.
