The Philadelphia Eagles, reigning Super Bowl champions, have decided to let go of their veteran cornerback Darius Slay, who has been selected for the Pro Bowl six times, as reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Monday. Slay’s release will officially be recorded as a post-June 1 transaction, allowing the Eagles to save $4.3 million on their salary cap. At present, the team has slightly more than $20 million in cap space. This financial adjustment is timely as several key players are on the brink of entering free agency next week. With several prominent stars committed to costly long-term contracts, general manager Howie Roseman highlighted last month the importance of bringing in talent on rookie contracts in specific areas.
In preparation for the evolving dynamics of their cornerback position, the Eagles drafted Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean with their top selections last April. Darius Slay, now 34 years old, has been with Philadelphia for the last five seasons, featuring in 14 games in the most recent season, and has achieved 28 interceptions over his 12-year career.
