A 3.9 magnitude earthquake rattled the San Fernando Valley around 10:15 p.m. on Sunday night, with tremors felt throughout Los Angeles, as reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The quake’s epicenter was located 1.2 miles east-southeast of North Hollywood. Interestingly, it followed just hours after the city’s glittering Oscars ceremony. Fortunately, no damage or injuries were immediately reported from this quake, which struck nearly 10 miles beneath the surface, according to USGS data.

The “Did You Feel It?” service by the USGS recorded over 8,000 responses from people across the Los Angeles area who felt the shaking, noted CNN affiliate KCAL/KCBS. Despite the widespread reports, the Los Angeles Fire Department announced on X that they wouldn’t be shifting into earthquake mode. CNN personnel near the epicenter experienced noticeable tremors, and the movement was described as “very apparent” in the KCAL/KCBS News studio in Studio City. “It was so scary,” said one North Hollywood resident to KCAL/KCBS. “I heard some noise, and then the ground shook violently… I stayed calm, but it caught us off guard. We continued enjoying our evening.” Contributions to this report came from CNN’s Sandra Gonzalez and Kevin Flower.
