Excitement for an Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered announcement is reaching a fever pitch. Images from the game surfaced on the developer Virtuous’s website before being swiftly taken down. While they were removed, these images remain available on imgur, showcasing several side-by-side comparisons between the original 2006 release and the remastered version. Among the highlights are stunning environments, including the iconic Oblivion Gate. An updated fire-wreathed logo and box art, including a deluxe edition for the remaster, are also part of the visual reveal.
Talk of an Oblivion remaster first surfaced in 2023, originating from documents related to the Federal Trade Commission’s case against Microsoft. These documents were linked to a Microsoft presentation about its acquisition of ZeniMax Studios, finalized in 2021 for a staggering $7.5 billion. Other titles mentioned in that presentation included a remaster of Fallout 3, a new installation in the Dishonored series, and a mysterious game called Doom Year Zero, potentially related to the anticipated Doom: The Dark Ages launching this May.
According to The Verge’s Tom Warren, Microsoft’s plan was to launch the remaster in late spring or early summer. In line with this, journalist and industry insider Jeff Grubb indicated that Microsoft intended a stealthy release of the game by next week. Although these image leaks may alter Microsoft’s schedule, there’s strong indication that the Oblivion remaster is on its way soon. As for Elder Scrolls VI, announced nearly seven years ago with little news since, its future remains uncertain.
