A massive explosion rocked a chemical plant close to Seville, Spain, creating a towering plume of smoke. Emergency services urged nearby residents to remain indoors, but thankfully, there were no injuries reported, as per statements released on Wednesday.

Authorities promptly advised approximately 80,000 residents to protect themselves by wearing face masks or shutting their windows tightly.

The explosion occurred around midday in an industrial zone within Alcalá de Guadaíra, which is situated roughly 16 kilometers (10 miles) to the east of Seville’s central district.

Following the incident, emergency services evacuated all personnel from the facility.

Officials have yet to disclose details on the specific chemicals housed at the plant or its ownership.

Spain has been encountering several challenges with its industrial, electric, and transportation systems of late.

Recently, a fire at a chemical factory in northeastern Spain prompted emergency services to alert 150,000 residents and impose shelter-in-place orders across five neighboring towns.

Earlier, on April 28, a widespread power outage affected both Spain and Portugal. Investigations are ongoing, but authorities have definitively ruled out the possibility of a cyber attack or sabotage.

This incident was followed by significant disruptions to train services between Madrid and Seville, caused by thieves stealing copper cables from the railway line.
