Early Monday morning, an apartment building on Detroit’s west side was rocked by a possible explosion that left several people injured. The incident occurred around 4 a.m. on March 31, near Littlefield and Schoolcraft, prompting widespread emergency alerts throughout Metro Detroit. Emergency responders reported that at least 12 individuals were rescued and taken to a nearby hospital for medical care.
Among the injured were six adults and six children. Authorities revealed that one man sustained severe burns covering 90% of his body. Additionally, a woman suffered burns on 20% to 40% of her body, and a 3-year-old child endured burns on 15% of their body.
Ashley Ridner, a young mother residing in the apartment complex, described her harrowing experience with the explosion. Along with her boyfriend and their 5-month-old son, she was among those rescued. “It sounded like a bomb,” she recounted. Ridner said her boyfriend had previously noted a gas odor before she fell asleep the night before the explosion occurred. In the chaos, her boyfriend hurt his arm while rescuing their son, and Ridner injured her feet while escaping through a window. Additionally, both their cars suffered destruction in the explosion. She also witnessed other victims being rescued with severe injuries. “Our whole life is in there. I don’t know what they expect us to do next,” she shared.
Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the explosion and have not yet determined what triggered the destructive event.
