The debut footage of Paramount’s eagerly anticipated reboot of the beloved Naked Gun spoof police film series has been unveiled. This new rendition features Liam Neeson as Frank Drebin Jr, the son of Leslie Nielsen’s legendary, clumsy detective character from the original films.
The teaser showcases Frank Drebin Jr as a significantly more suave figure compared to his late father. One scene depicts him cleverly disabling a criminal disguised as a schoolgirl, using a sharpened lollipop. Following this, he is shown emotionally speaking to a photo of the elder Drebin. Meanwhile, characters related to Captain Ed Hocken (portrayed by George Kennedy) and Officer Nordberg (originally played by OJ Simpson) also appear, reflecting their connection to the legacy.
OJ Simpson passed away last year, as did Jim Abrahams, who was one of the original series’ co-creators. George Kennedy and Leslie Nielsen, both significant figures from the previous films, died in 2016 and 2010, respectively.
Directing this new film is Akiva Schaffer, with production led by Ted’s Seth MacFarlane. Joining the cast are Pamela Anderson and Danny Huston.
Liam Neeson, now 72, was an Oscar nominee for his role in the 1993 film “Schindler’s List.” He rejuvenated his career with action-packed roles, notably in the “Taken” series from 2008 to 2014. Despite talks of retiring from action roles, Neeson continues to headline such films, with “Absolution” set for release in 2024 being his latest.
The original three Naked Gun films not only received critical acclaim but also achieved box office success, grossing $166 million. They remain popular, continuing to generate viewership through home entertainment channels and streaming services.
