A heated confrontation led to the ejection of five players and two coaches during the second quarter of Sunday’s game between the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Detroit Pistons.
Detroit suffered the loss of head coach J.B. Bickerstaff, along with players center Isaiah Stewart, forward Ron Holland II, and guard Marcus Sasser. Meanwhile, Minnesota had forward Naz Reid and guard Donte DiVincenzo expelled, as well as assistant coach Pablo Prigioni.
The altercation kicked off with 8:36 remaining in the half, with the Pistons leading 39-30. The tension rose after Stewart received a technical foul for aggressively bumping DiVincenzo post-whistle. The situation escalated when Holland was charged with a foul while swiping the ball from Reid near the baseline.
A heated exchange ensued, prompting DiVincenzo to intervene by grabbing Holland’s jersey. This led to a full-blown skirmish involving all players on the court, along with numerous coaches and health staff.
While separating the players, an intense shouting match erupted between Bickerstaff and Prigioni, requiring team staff to pull them apart.
The tumultuous scene unfolded just 20 feet away from new Timberwolves co-owner Alex Rodriguez. He approached from his courtside position during the incident, seemingly to assist a fan caught amidst the chaos.
