In a surprising move confirmed by ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the San Francisco Giants have secured All-Star power hitter Rafael Devers from the Boston Red Sox. In return, the Giants are sending pitcher Jordan Hicks and promising 23-year-old left-hander Kyle Harrison, among other players, to Boston.
Devers, aged 28, is currently in the midst of a 10-year, $313.5 million deal he signed to remain with the Red Sox in January 2023. However, tensions have soared due to an unexpected shift to designated hitter this spring and his rejection of a recent proposal to take over first base after Triston Casas’ season-ending knee injury. The situation escalated to the point where Red Sox owner John Henry personally intervened, visiting the team on the road to address Devers’ dissatisfaction after his outspoken reaction to the position change.
The addition of Hicks and Harrison strengthens the Red Sox’s pitching roster, which has been in need of depth. Meanwhile, Devers is set to significantly enhance the Giants’ struggling offense, with his impressive tally of over 200 career home runs and a .894 OPS recorded this season with Boston.
