CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Memphis Grizzlies’ starting guard Jaylen Wells sustained a broken right wrist following a severe fall from a midair collision during a fast-break dunk, securing a win against Charlotte. This injury likely sidelines the rookie just as the Grizzlies prepare for the playoffs.

Wells remained on the court for eight minutes before medical staff carefully placed him on a stretcher, ensuring minimal movement by securing his head. Interim coach Tuomas Iisalo later reported that Wells had full movement in his limbs after being hospitalized.

“Seeing Jaylen in that condition really puts life into perspective,” Iisalo remarked. “He’s an incredibly resilient player who has had an outstanding season.”

Fred Wells, Jaylen’s father, shared with the Memphis Commercial Appeal that his son was alert enough to inquire about the game score, though he experienced pain in his face, jaw, and back.

The incident occurred when Wells caught a pass from Ja Morant and soared towards the hoop. Charlotte’s KJ Simpson, attempting to catch up, unintentionally disrupted Wells’ balance, causing him to land awkwardly and impact his head hard on the court near the baseline.

“It’s difficult,” Morant shared. “I threw the pass and turned to celebrate. The first thing I saw was blood, and it really shook me, as I’ve got a weak stomach. We need to keep supporting him and hope for the best. It’s next man up. Losing him is tough, but everyone must be prepared.”

The game was paused for 23 minutes, including time needed for both teams to warm up again. After reviewing the play, officials assessed a flagrant foul 2 on Simpson for unnecessary contact, which resulted in his automatic ejection. Simpson immediately checked on Wells after their collision and appeared distraught while Wells received care in the silent arena.

Drafted in the second round in 2024 from Washington State, Wells had not missed a game, starting 74 out of 79 contests for Memphis. Before the injury, the 6-foot-7 rookie was averaging 10.5 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game. With the victory, the Grizzlies moved into a tie for fourth in the tight Western Conference race, though a drop to as low as eighth is still possible.
