The Indian Premier League (IPL) has been put on hold for a week due to rising tensions between India and Pakistan.

Overnight, India alleged that Pakistan launched attacks using drones and missiles on three of its military installations, a charge that Pakistan has refuted.

Pakistani officials report that since Wednesday morning, Indian air strikes have resulted in 31 fatalities and 57 injuries in parts of Pakistan and the Kashmir region governed by Pakistan.

Last month, 26 civilians lost their lives in the Indian-controlled part of Kashmir. India blames Pakistan for backing the militants responsible for the attack, a claim Pakistan has consistently denied.

The conflict intensified on Tuesday evening when India initiated a series of strikes under the operation dubbed “Sindoor.”

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) stated: “After discussions with all primary stakeholders and heeding the concerns of most franchisees, who relayed the anxieties of their players, the broadcaster, sponsors, and fans, the IPL Governing Council decided to suspend the league.”

“While the BCCI expresses complete trust in the capability of our armed forces, the board deemed it wise to take this action for the collective benefit of everyone involved.”

On Thursday, the match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamsala was halted mid-game due to a floodlight malfunction, prompting the evacuation of players, staff, and media from the city, which is close to Kashmir.

Subsequently, matches of the Pakistan Super League were relocated to the United Arab Emirates.

Originally slated to conclude on May 23 with 16 games remaining, the IPL is the wealthiest T20 league globally.

“We will provide updates on the rescheduled games and venues after thoroughly assessing the situation and consulting with the relevant parties,” the BCCI announced.

This year’s IPL roster includes 10 players from England, among them former white-ball captain Jos Buttler, fast bowler Jofra Archer, and all-rounder Jacob Bethell.

In past instances, IPL fixtures have been held outside India. The 2009 season took place in South Africa following an attack on the Sri Lankan national team in Lahore, Pakistan, and portions of the 2020 and 2021 seasons were hosted in the United Arab Emirates in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

More details are expected as the situation progresses.
