Jagex has taken the gaming world by storm with the surprise early access release of its new survival game, Runescape Dragonwilds. However, diving into this latest addition to the Runescape universe comes with a few considerations.
Shadow drops are thrilling, and the recent addition of Runescape Dragonwilds ranks right up there with the best. This surprise release joins the likes of Hi-Fi Rush and The Finals, adding a unique survival twist to the MMORPG’s expansive fantasy setting. Launched just weeks after its announcement, it’s accessible in early access mode immediately, marking a new chapter in the Runescape saga. But before you rush off on your next adventure, there’s some crucial information to consider.
In Dragonwilds, you find yourself among a ragtag crew that survived a shipwreck in the enchanting, yet dangerous, land of Ashenfall. This region is filled with vibrant flora and fearsome dragons that pose a constant threat. Most of your fellow survivors haven’t made it, leaving the few remaining to grapple for survival. At first glance, Runescape Dragonwilds appears to be just another survival game, but it offers so much more.
In a conversation earlier this year, Jagex’s community manager Jake Blunt emphasized that Dragonwilds is not simply “Valheim with party hats.” And rightly so. Players can upgrade from a basic wood axe to a magically-infused ‘axetral’ spell that fells multiple trees in a single line. You can effortlessly construct shelters using mind-bending mental shortcuts and swiftly navigate via Ashenfall’s mystical air runes. These features aim to reduce the redundancy of grinding, all while providing a spectacular experience.
Yet, Ashenfall’s dragons are far from welcoming. Their aerial presence shakes the forest and echoes through the mountains, underscoring just how small you are in this sprawling world. Confronting these formidable beasts is key to cleansing their corruption from the land, so prepare your weapons for an epic battle.
The early-access journey of Dragonwilds promises fresh exploration zones like Fellhollow and its draconic overlord, Imaru, in addition to a slew of new skills. The hardcore mode is particularly intriguing, likely inspired by the popular Iron Man mode from Runescape. Although only a preview of what’s to come, this early access phase is packed with content.
As of today, April 15, Jagex has launched Runescape Dragonwilds for £24.99 / $29.99. It’s available here.
However, there’s a catch. To enjoy online multiplayer with friends, you must link your Steam and Epic Games accounts, necessitating an Epic account for multiplayer.
“This title uses Epic Account Services Basic Profile to connect players across platforms,” reads the game’s notification. “By selecting ‘continue with Epic Games,’ you agree to the Epic Account Services Terms and Conditions. You can opt to play solo without linking, and if you later change your mind, you can return to this screen.” Given past issues like the Helldivers 2 PSN controversy, this requirement might deter some players.
