Joann, a well-known craft retailer, has stopped accepting gift cards as the chain carries out the liquidation of all its stores. This move follows their bankruptcy filing in January. Initially, the plan was to shut down over half of their 800-plus locations, but with GA Group’s acquisition of most of Joann’s assets, an announcement was made that every store would now close.
As Joann’s going-out-of-business sales progress, the retailer has decided to halt the acceptance of gift cards previously issued by them. This decision took effect on February 28, shortly after announcing on February 25 that all stores would close.
Customers have voiced their dissatisfaction across social media platforms, expressing their dismay over holding unredeemable gift cards. “I just want you to know how incredibly upsetting it is that you cut off our ability to use gift cards,” one frustrated user commented on the Joann Instagram page. “Regardless of the fact you are closing, your business took money and now refuses to provide the product in exchange for it. Wrong.”
While each state has different laws concerning the use and expiration of gift cards, their usability during liquidation is decided by bankruptcy courts.
