Oakland residents are gearing up for a pivotal special election on Tuesday, where they will decide who will step into the mayoral shoes left empty after the recall of former Mayor Sheng Thao last November. The race features nine contenders vying for the mayor’s office, with former U.S. Representative Barbara Lee and ex-city councilman Loren Taylor emerging as the leading candidates.
Following Thao’s recall and subsequent indictment, a series of city leaders have temporarily filled the mayoral role, with Kevin Jenkins most recently serving as the interim mayor since his appointment in January. Besides selecting a new mayor, Oakland voters will also choose a city council representative for District 2. Additionally, they will determine the fate of Measure A, which proposes a half-cent increase to the local sales tax.
