Kroger disclosed in its first-quarter earnings report on June 20th that it plans to shut down 60 grocery stores, equating to about 5% of its 1,239 current locations, within the next 18 months. Operating across 16 states, Kroger has its largest presence in Indiana, Kentucky, Texas, Tennessee, Michigan, Georgia, and Ohio. Employees from the closing stores will have opportunities to transfer to other locations within the company.
The company will incur a $100 million impairment charge due to these closures but foresees a slight financial gain in the aftermath. Kroger has affirmed its commitment to channel these savings back into enhancing the shopping experience for customers.
