Jonathan Kuminga was seen practicing late at the Chase Center, long after his teammates had left the arena. This came after Coach Steve Kerr chose not to play him in the recent game, marking Kuminga’s first DNP-Coach’s Decision since the 2023 Western Conference semifinals. Before the game, Kerr had informed Kuminga that his participation in the first quarter was uncertain, and intentions to include him later on were unsettled. Gary Payton II substituted Kuminga’s normal early game position, ending the match with two points, four rebounds, three assists, and a steal. Additional bench players included Buddy Hield and Kevon Looney contributing 16 minutes each, along with Quinten Post at 10 minutes, while starters averaged over 39 minutes, Jimmy Butler notably clocking all 48 minutes of the overtime defeat.

“Since Jimmy’s arrival, we’ve found a lineup we’re comfortable with,” Kerr noted. Gui Santos, like Kuminga, didn’t play but has been crucial on the plus-minus front recently. Kerr reassured that this lineup decision doesn’t discount their future roles; it’s simply how the game unfolded. Just days ago, Kerr expressed worries about Kuminga’s fit following Butler’s integration into the team in early February. He remarked that while Butler’s entrance impacted Kuminga’s floor time at the four, the team’s winning streak during that period justified the decision. “Jonathan’s absence coincided with a remarkable 17-3 record, and adapting quickly becomes essential in the NBA,” said Kerr.

Since Kuminga’s return from an ankle injury, Golden State’s performance was 11-4, showcasing adaptability with or without him. Kuminga shined last December with a career-high 34 points against the Lakers, adding a much-needed 10 rebounds. However, in the latest game, outperformed in rebounds, Warriors lost 42-25 to Los Angeles, illustrating upcoming rebounding challenges against the Clippers and top-ranked Memphis Grizzlies. Furthermore, the looming presence of the Houston Rockets, the league’s top rebounding team, awaits the playoff winner between Warriors and Grizzlies. Golden State must prepare to tackle these rebounding challenges in their future matchups.
