Caleb Okoli delivered a crucial equalizer, helping Leicester City—facing relegation pressures—snap their eight-game losing streak with a gritty draw against Brighton, who are chasing European football dreams.
Okoli, filling in for the sidelined Wout Faes, showcased his prowess with a diving header, translating Bilal El Khannouss’ precise free-kick into a much-needed point for Ruud van Nistelrooy’s squad, leaving Brighton’s keeper Bart Verbruggen unable to respond.
Leicester notched their first league goal since January 26th as Stephy Mavididi leveled the score in the first half, nullifying Joao Pedro’s earlier penalty that had positioned Brighton in the lead.
Even with this draw, Leicester remains deep in the Premier League’s danger zone, anchored second-to-last and 14 points shy of safety, with only six fixtures left in the season.
Brazilian striker Pedro set the tempo, converting a penalty shortly past the half-hour mark after Simon Adingra’s attempt inadvertently struck the arm of Leicester’s Conor Coady inside the penalty area.
Moments later, after Adingra’s shot barely grazed the crossbar, Mavididi pounced on Lewis Dunk’s defensive blunder, beating Verbruggen and ending Leicester’s agonizing 885-minute scoreless streak.
Brighton’s Matt O’Riley was denied by the crossbar, but Leicester seized momentum towards halftime, forcing Verbruggen to avert Kasey McAteer’s threatening header.
The hosts found themselves back in front early in the second period when Luke Thomas’s error conceded another penalty, which Pedro elegantly slotted into the top corner, leaving Leicester’s Mads Hermansen helpless.
Persistent in their quest for an equalizer, Leicester saw Patson Daka thwarted by Verbruggen. Nonetheless, Okoli ultimately converted El Khannouss’ set-piece to level the match, rattling Brighton.
Leicester nearly clinched victory, but El Khannouss’ curling strike was denied by the woodwork in the dying moments. Brighton are now on a three-game winless run, sitting ninth, and trailing seven points behind the top four.
