Liverpool narrowly avoided defeat but couldn’t widen their Premier League lead to 10 points after a gripping 2-2 draw with Aston Villa. This outcome breathes new life into Arsenal’s title hopes.

The match kicked off with a defensive mishap from Aston Villa’s Andres Garcia, whose misplaced pass landed at the feet of Diogo Jota. Jota swiftly passed the ball to Mohamed Salah, who netted his 24th goal this season.

However, Liverpool’s lead was short-lived. Villa equalized after Liverpool failed to properly clear a free-kick, allowing Youri Tielemans to power in a volley. As Liverpool appealed for a handball against John McGinn, Ollie Watkins capitalized on the confusion to head the ball into the net just before halftime.

Aston Villa’s Marcus Rashford came close to extending their lead, maneuvering past Liverpool’s goalie Alisson and forcing Ibrahima Konate to clear from the line. Liverpool found their way back thanks to Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose deflected strike deceived Emi Martinez.

Liverpool pressed for victory, with Darwin Nunez missing a vital chance, and Villa’s Donyell Malen fired a shot just wide. The draw, Liverpool’s second consecutive away, keeps the title door ajar for Arsenal, who could close the gap further against West Ham.

A look at Liverpool’s recent form shows only one victory in their last four outings, including their FA Cup loss to Plymouth. Yet, these draws at Everton and Aston Villa offer valuable points in a typical title race context.

With upcoming fixtures against Manchester City and Newcastle, collecting four points from these could position Liverpool favorably.

Manager Arne Slot addressed the substitutions of Alexander-Arnold and Jota, which occurred soon after the team’s equalizer. Slot clarified these changes were predetermined, considering both players are recovering from injuries.

“Jota was off the field for months, playing just 60 minutes today alongside Trent,” Slot explained. “We have to manage their playing time because of the packed schedule and recent injuries.”

Who truly deserved to win? Slot believes Liverpool merited a victory given their overall performance.

He told TNT Sports, “Being Liverpool means there’s always pressure. We have what it takes to succeed this season; many games suggest we’re the deserving winners.”

Unai Emery had a different take, acknowledging Villa seized their opportunities. “If you’re playing Liverpool, they can strike effectively. Both sides had chances, especially in the final stretch.”

Although Slot was disappointed with the missed opportunities and set-piece goal conceded, he praised his team’s effort. “We had numerous chances,” he admitted. “Their second opportunity ended in a goal, but overall, we created more.”

Slot also hinted at a shared sense of frustration among players: “You can see there’s someone in the locker room feeling particularly low after this draw—a feeling I’m sure many fans share.”
