As St. Patrick’s Day weekend draws near, local law enforcement is ramping up patrol efforts to ensure community safety.

The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office (NHCSO) is emphasizing the risks associated with the Irish celebration.

Alongside other agencies, the NHCSO is actively participating in the Booze It & Lose It Campaign, focused on curbing incidents of drinking and driving.

“We will increase our presence with multiple officers and collaborate with other agencies to deter people from driving under the influence,” stated NHCSO Lt. Jerry Brewer. “We are all aware of the tragic consequences it can cause, and our goal is to keep those individuals off the roads.”

With only a few days until St. Patrick’s Day, the initiative aims to reduce the instances of driving while intoxicated.

While there won’t be sobriety checkpoints due to the unavailability of a BAT vehicle, additional patrols will be implemented.

Lt. Brewer reminds everyone of the severe, potentially life-altering repercussions of choosing to drive after consuming alcohol.

“If we can remove just one impaired driver from the road, it is worthwhile if it means saving a life,” Brewer said.

The campaign is ongoing and will continue until Monday, March 17th, St. Patrick’s Day itself.

Brewer advises those who have been drinking to arrange a ride home or risk a “free ride” to jail provided by NHCSO.
