EVANSVILLE, Wis. (WKOW) — Residents James and Pat O’Brien have called Evansville home since 1989, but they had never experienced anything like the intense hailstorm that swept through on Friday.

“I was chatting with my daughter as I heard reports of approaching storms on TV. I advised her to seek some shelter,” James shared. “As soon as she found cover, she called to say the hail was pounding down fiercely.”

Realizing the urgency, James had to abruptly end his call with his daughter to protect their vehicles. He quickly covered the windshields and sunroof with bags of mulch.

Meanwhile, Pat was indoors with their 3-year-old granddaughter. She contemplated moving to the basement but quickly decided against it as the storm subsided almost as suddenly as it began.

In the aftermath, the O’Briens are meticulously choosing who will handle their repairs. James noted the influx of out-of-state construction companies vying for jobs.

“There are a couple dozen companies putting their signs up in yards. It seemed strange to me how they managed to contact so many homeowners almost instantly,” he remarked.

The Evansville Police Department is urging residents to be vigilant against scammers in the guise of contractors, who often appear after storms. These individuals may wander neighborhoods, offering quick repair services and demanding advance payment—only to either vanish or perform shoddy work.

Here are their recommended guidelines for protection:

  • Conduct thorough research before hiring. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) at www.bbb.org is a valuable resource for checking a company’s credibility.
  • Avoid making cash payments or substantial upfront deposits.
  • Secure all agreements in writing, including the complete work scope, timelines, and payment terms.
  • Be cautious of high-pressure sales pitches or claims of being “just in the neighborhood.”
  • Choose established local companies known for their legitimate work. Don’t fall prey to transient “storm chasers” looking to exploit the chaos.

If you suspect any fraudulent activities or feel uneasy, it’s crucial to contact the Evansville Police Department for support.
