Ford has confirmed its cooperation with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) as they investigate a serious defect identified in certain Ford F-150 trucks. The NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation is conducting a “Preliminary Evaluation” focusing on reports that 2015-2017 Ford F-150 models unexpectedly downshift at high speeds without warning.

According to an announcement on the NHTSA website, there have been 138 consumer complaints about these vehicles unexpectedly downshifting to lower gears while cruising on highways. This sudden shift not only causes a rapid decrease in vehicle speed but complaints also suggest that the rear wheels may temporarily lock or skid, leading to loss of control and an increased risk of accidents and injuries.

The purpose of this evaluation is to assess the extent and seriousness of the possible safety issues involved. Under review are approximately 1,270,970 Ford F-150 models produced between 2015 and 2017. A Ford representative confirmed to Fox News Digital that they are assisting with the NHTSA’s investigation, which specifically targets issues with the 6-speed transmissions in these vehicles. Previously, Ford has issued recalls for similar downshifting problems in other F-150 models.
