Oakland’s very own Tony! Toni! Toné! guitarist is currently battling “medical complications,” the band shared on social media. On Wednesday, they announced that D’Wayne Wiggins is taking on his health struggles “one day at a time.” The band emphasized the widespread love and support for Wiggins, expressing their gratitude for everyone’s prayers and concern.
On Friday afternoon, the Wiggins family issued a statement highlighting D’Wayne’s unique contribution to the world. “D’Wayne’s life was unparalleled, and his influence through music and service touched millions globally, especially in his hometown of Oakland, California. A multifaceted talent, he was a guitarist, producer, composer, philanthropist, and mentor, known as a founding member of Tony! Toni! Toné! His dedication to mentoring young artists has been steadfast, fostering the growth of talents such as Beyoncé, Destiny’s Child, Zendaya, Kehlani, H.E.R, Keyshia Cole, and Alicia Keys. He created nurturing spaces for artists, where all-night jam sessions became legendary in both studio and live settings.
What remains a mystery is the specific nature of Wiggins’ complications or how long he has been dealing with these issues.
The Grammy-nominated R&B ensemble was booked to perform at the Grand Theatre Center for the Arts in Tracy on March 22, yet the gig has been called off due to “illness,” per the venue. Another appearance at Detroit’s Music Hall Center on May 23 was also canceled, Ticketmaster notes, though it’s uncertain whether Wiggins’ health is the reason.
From the local scene, musicians and entertainers have been voicing their support and sending well-wishes to Wiggins. Oakland natives like Sheila E. and Boots Riley have expressed their solidarity. “Thinking about you, man. Sending love. Get well soon and bring us the funk,” Riley shared. Meanwhile, Sheila E. urged, “Fam, [please] pray for my brother Dwayne Wiggins. He needs prayer,” in a heartfelt post. Additional tributes have come from singer Karyn White and the duo Kindred the Family Soul, both extending their prayers and love. The Wiggins family asks for privacy during this challenging period.”
