A series of earthquakes has jolted Istanbul, Turkey’s bustling metropolis, with the most powerful recording a magnitude of 6.2. The seismic activity, extending its reach to the nation’s capital, located 275 miles away, triggered widespread panic as residents hurriedly evacuated shaky structures. Although over fifty aftershocks have rippled through the region, substantial damage has thankfully been averted thus far. While no fatalities have been reported, authorities confirm that at least 151 individuals sustained injuries, predominantly from leaping off heights in their haste to escape.

The BBC’s correspondent, Orla Guerin, notes that this tremor ranks among the most severe Istanbul has experienced in recent times. Experts have persistently warned of the city’s susceptibility to a major earthquake, and such occurrences inevitably stir anxiety among its inhabitants.
