The New England Patriots have successfully signed four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Stefon Diggs in a major move. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the two parties agreed on a three-year contract valued at $69 million, including $26 million in guaranteed money.
Currently 31 years old, Diggs is on the mend from an ACL injury that cut his season short during a match between the Houston Texans and the Indianapolis Colts in Week 8.
Up until his injury, Diggs was having a standout season, ranking seventh in the NFL with 47 receptions, and was second in receiving yards for the Texans with 496. His exceptional performance was highlighted by the Texans’ quarterback, C.J. Stroud, achieving a passer rating of 104 and a 73% completion rate when targeting Diggs.
Initially, the Patriots pursued top receiver Chris Godwin in free agency, showing a clear intent to bolster their offensive lineup alongside their second-year quarterback, Drake Maye. After Godwin chose to return to Tampa Bay, the Patriots turned their attention to Diggs, inviting him for a meeting last week.
With Diggs on board, the Patriots enhance their receiving unit, which already features new acquisition Mack Hollins, veteran Kendrick Bourne, and emerging third-year talents Kayshon Boutte and DeMario Douglas.
The Texans acquired Diggs from the Buffalo Bills last year, and part of this trade involved voiding the last three years of his contract, setting him up for free agency by 2025.
During his tenure with the Bills, Diggs shattered both team and NFL records, becoming one of just four players in the league’s history to notch four consecutive seasons with over 100 receptions, joining the ranks of Antonio Brown, Davante Adams, and Marvin Harrison.
Originally a fifth-round draft pick by the Minnesota Vikings in 2015, Diggs boasts a remarkable NFL career with 857 receptions, 10,491 yards, and 71 touchdowns, 70 of which are receiving touchdowns, over 10 seasons.
