Paulinho, the forward for Toluca and the current top scorer in Liga MX, shared his thoughts on the upcoming match against América. He emphasized that the game is not seen as a chance for revenge but rather as an opportunity to earn three points and showcase his team’s skills. This comes after Toluca was knocked out in the quarterfinals by América in the previous tournament. “It’s not about revenge. I don’t see it that way. We just aim to win. Revenge isn’t part of my mindset,” the Portuguese striker revealed during Friday’s press conference ahead of the Diablos’ visit to Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes. “Our focus and mindset are always about winning, regardless of the last game’s result against them,” Paulinho added, highlighting his recent performance with four goals in the last two matches against Juárez and Querétaro.

Paulinho also pointed out that the match in the tenth round is not comparable to their previous playoff clash, as playoff games have a different intensity and dynamics. He views this encounter as just another match against a strong opponent. “Playoff games are distinct; they’re not a benchmark. This is a match against a good team, and we relish playing these games. It’s vital because we’ve been performing well in our last two matches, and now we face the champions, a formidable team,” emphasized the scarlet striker.

When asked about his pursuit of the top scorer title, which he’s currently competing for with Necaxa’s forward Diber Cambindo, Paulinho stated it’s not a primary concern for him. “To me, it’s not crucial. My main focus is reaching the playoffs and winning with Toluca. Goals come through effort, but it’s beyond my control. I strive to score in every match, but it’s not something that occupies my thoughts excessively,” said the goal-scoring ace. He further mentioned his successful adaptation to collaborating with fellow striker Robert Morales and their growing understanding of coach Antonio Mohamed’s strategies. “It’s a different approach. We’re playing with two forwards, and I’m adapting. The priority isn’t myself, it’s the team. I feel good. We’ve already played a tournament together, getting familiar with each other, and aligning with the new coach’s vision is a process, but that’s the path forward.”
