CINCINNATI — A rain delay has disrupted the beginning of the series between the Chicago White Sox and the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park on Tuesday, the Reds announced earlier today. “We will provide more information as it becomes available,” the Reds communicated via social media.
Scheduled to kick off a three-game series, the Sox had plans ready with left-hander Brandon Eisert designated as the opener, setting the stage for right-hander Jonathan Cannon.
“Felt pretty certain they would go with left-hand hitter TJ Friedl and Elly De La Cruz, who bats switch, in the top three slots against lefty starters,” Sox manager Will Venable explained. “This strategy helps us get the favorable matchup up front. Just as importantly, or even more so, it provides Cannon with a great opportunity to pitch long into the game.
“Cannon has demonstrated his capability to do so effectively, even without an opener. With one, he nearly covered the entire game for us against the Athletics on April 26 in West Sacramento, Calif. This approach reduces stress on our bullpen, ensures we get the right matchups initially, and capitalizes on Cannon’s talents to pitch deep into the game.”
