The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) finally conquered their notorious Chennai demons in an astonishing fashion. On a pitch that played to their strengths, RCB delivered a truly commanding performance. For the first time since the inaugural IPL, RCB defeated Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on their home turf, achieving a resounding 50-run triumph. This victory marked CSK’s largest home defeat. The match quickly lost its competitive edge, turning into a drag, as more than half of CSK’s innings revolved around the anticipation of MS Dhoni’s batting appearance, which came unexpectedly at No. 9—only the second such instance in his career.

Pre-match discussions were dominated by how RCB would handle CSK’s 12-over spin assault. However, the actual conditions inverted the narrative, shifting the focus to how CSK would contend with eight overs of conventional seam and swing bowling from Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Josh Hazlewood. As it turned out, CSK struggled, evidenced by the stellar combined figures of 7-0-41-4 by the RCB duo. All this came after RCB’s batsmen had already asserted their dominance against the CSK attack on a tricky surface. Alongside Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar, Khaleel Ahmed also exploited seam and bounce, something CSK’s bowlers lacked in their armory.

Rajat Patidar led RCB’s innings with aplomb, seizing opportunity with aggression. He capitalized on a dropped catch at 17, pushing forward to score 51 from 32 deliveries. Limited to only five overs, R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja conceded 59 runs, with RCB clearly getting the upper hand and dictating terms throughout the match.
