It’s a somber moment for the American Idol community as they come together to remember Doug Kiker, a talented contestant from Season 18, who passed away at 32. Doug’s family shared the sad news about his demise on Facebook on March 12.

His sister, Angela Evans, expressed her grief on social media, reminiscing about how deeply loved Doug was. “He’s singing with the angels now,” she wrote, asking for prayers as their family navigates through this challenging period.

Another heartfelt tribute came from Doug’s sister, Donna Kiker Carrillos-Ramirez. “Today, I received the call no one ever wants,” she mentioned. “We’ve lost an incredible person today. His laughter and vibrant smile were unforgettable.” Although she didn’t raise him herself, Donna emphasized the love she had for Doug, acknowledging her parents’ remarkable job in bringing him up. “Douglas Kiker, you’ll be forever missed. Fly high and whisper a hello to grandma,” she wrote.

The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, but according to TMZ, Doug’s former fiancée and mother of his children, Valerie Cook, confirmed he passed on March 10. Faced with unexpected funeral expenses, the family launched a GoFundMe campaign to cover the costs of bringing his remains back from Denver, Colorado.

Affectionately dubbed “The Singing Garbage Man,” Kiker stole hearts with his touching rendition of “Bless the Broken Road” by Rascal Flatts during his audition. His raw musical gift was undeniable, and the story behind his audition was just as inspiring. Kiker showed immense courage and took a leap of faith, aspiring to demonstrate to his young daughter that dreams are limitless when pursued with determination.

Lionel Richie, one of the show’s judges, was particularly impressed. “He came here not knowing his incredible potential,” Richie noted, commending him for being “a hell of a man” determined to inspire his daughter. Katy Perry, another judge, was visibly moved, unable to hold back tears as Kiker received his Hollywood ticket.

Although his journey on the show ended sooner than hoped, with his exit following his rendition of “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” by Marvin Gaye, Kiker made a memorable return to the stage. He performed a virtual duet with Rascal Flatts during the season finale in May 2020.

Grateful for the platform American Idol offered, Kiker shared the duet on his YouTube page, expressing his excitement. “Wow, y’all! Singing with Rascal Flatts was a dream,” he wrote. “So much has happened since that first audition.” He hinted at an upcoming album, thanking fans for their support. “I couldn’t have done it without y’all!” he exclaimed.
