The Seattle Seahawks are bolstering their receiving lineup by signing veteran wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling to a one-year contract valued at up to $5.5 million, as confirmed by a source to ESPN on Wednesday.
This strategic move comes as the Seahawks tackle one of their major challenges following the trade of star receiver DK Metcalf to the Pittsburgh Steelers and the release of Tyler Lockett. With these changes, Jaxon Smith-Njigba remains one of the few notable options in their receiving team.
Valdes-Scantling will be reuniting with Seattle’s offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak, with whom he worked last season while with the New Orleans Saints.
After being released by the Buffalo Bills midseason, Valdes-Scantling, aged 30, joined the Saints in October, stepping in for an injured Rashid Shaheed and emerging as the leading deep-threat receiver for the team last year.
During his brief stint with the Bills, he managed just two catches over six games before his release. However, with the Saints, he quickly became a favorite target for quarterback Derek Carr. In eight games, Valdes-Scantling secured 17 catches for 385 yards and scored four touchdowns, notably achieving two touchdowns from only three receptions in a Week 9 match against the Atlanta Falcons.
Entering his eighth season, Valdes-Scantling is riding high on a career-best season, having averaged 22.6 yards per catch during his time with New Orleans.
Originally drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL Draft, Valdes-Scantling played four seasons there before inking a three-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs. While with the Chiefs, he contributed to two Super Bowl victories. After two seasons, he was released.
Over his seven-season career, Valdes-Scantling has amassed 205 receptions totaling 3,566 yards and achieved 20 touchdowns.
