A powerful earthquake has struck central Myanmar, prompting an emergency response in Bangkok, Thailand. According to reports from Agence France-Presse, the quake occurred on Friday, March 28th, in Myanmar’s Sagaing Region, registering a magnitude of 7.7. The tremors were so intense that they were strongly felt in the area around Bangkok. In response, Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra swiftly declared a state of emergency in the city.
In the aftermath of the quake, a 30-story building under construction collapsed due to the seismic activity, trapping approximately 43 workers beneath the rubble. Meanwhile, the Chinese news agency, Xinhua, citing Thai media, reported that the collapse has already resulted in one confirmed fatality. Thailand’s disaster prevention and mitigation department has reported that the earthquake’s impact was felt across northern, northeastern, central, and southern regions of Thailand.
