The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department has issued a warning about potential severe weather hazards expected this evening. Based on a news release, all types of severe weather threats are on the table due to an incoming storm system.
According to the National Weather Service, supercells are likely to develop ahead of the main storm line, significantly increasing the chances of tornadoes, including long-track tornadoes that could be particularly dangerous. Additionally, the storm poses the risk of damaging wind gusts reaching up to 80 mph and hail that may be as large as 1 to 2 inches in diameter.
Heavy rainfall is anticipated from this evening into the night, which could lead to local flash flooding. The forecast indicates that excessive rainfall will last through the weekend.
The current weather service forecast predicts that southern Indiana will receive between 7 to 10 inches of rain from tonight through Sunday.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has also released a forecast indicating that the East Fork White River at Rockford could reach around 18.2 feet by 8 p.m. Friday. Major flooding concerns arise at a 19-foot level.
Multiple rounds of heavy rainfall this week and into the weekend are likely to cause significant flooding along main rivers and low-lying areas. The weather outlook suggests a high possibility of major flooding along much of the East Fork and White River.
The sheriff’s department urges caution, advising residents to ensure they have reliable means to receive severe weather alerts.
If you reside in Jackson County and are typically impacted by floods, it’s crucial to prepare for this potential threat and avoid driving on flooded roads. Should you encounter floodwaters, call 911 immediately.
