The Metro Detroit region is bracing for a night of severe weather as a series of powerful storms sweep through the area.

Sirens are sounding across multiple cities in Southeast Michigan, with strong winds and heavy rainfall prompting severe thunderstorm warnings across the region.

Despite rain continuing into the night, by 7:45 p.m., Macomb County was experiencing the most intense storm clusters remaining, while the worst seems to have moved past most of Metro Detroit, according to FOX 2 Weather Authority Rich Luterman.

The storm systems are moving northeast at a rapid pace of 65 miles per hour, bringing winds over 50 mph and hail the size of pennies. An extraordinary gust of 95 mph was recorded in Jackson, Michigan.

Power outages have been reported, with DTE Energy noting around 23,000 customers without electricity as of 7:50 p.m., according to their Outage Map.

It’s critical to maintain a distance of at least 25 feet from any downed power lines and anything they might be touching, as they should be considered live and hazardous.

The National Weather Service urges vigilance for potential tornadoes, which can form rapidly from these severe thunderstorms. If you see a tornado or suspect one due to swirling winds, head immediately to a basement or a small central room in a robust building.

Stay tuned to FOX 2 for ongoing updates as the situation develops further.
