NFL Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe has found himself at the center of a serious legal battle, as a lawsuit filed in Nevada state court accuses him of rape and sexual assault. In this case, Jane Doe alleges that Sharpe, now 56 and working with ESPN, sexually assaulted her repeatedly during their nearly two-year-long “rocky consensual relationship,” as revealed in a complaint accessible to PEOPLE. The plaintiff further accuses Sharpe of recording their intimate moments without her consent and distributing those recordings. The complaint emphatically states, “A woman can say ‘yes’ to consensual sexual relations with a man ninety-nine times, but when she says ‘no’ even once, that ‘no’ means no.” It suggests that Sharpe, “a man who is accustomed to getting what he wants,” has completely misunderstood this foundational concept.

The plaintiff, currently residing in Nevada, recounts meeting Sharpe at a Los Angeles gym in 2023, when she was 22. She claims Sharpe continually pursued her during her subsequent visits to the gym until she acquiesced. According to the lawsuit, Sharpe initially requested that she sign a non-disclosure agreement before their meetings but withdrew the request when she objected. The lawsuit describes a later event in which Sharpe allegedly became violent and threatened her life for arriving late to his home. The suit asserts that Sharpe demanded “complete control over her time and body,” dictating that she be available to him at his discretion.

In 2024, both Sharpe and the plaintiff relocated to Nevada. The complaint details an incident in September 2024 related to Sharpe’s accidental Instagram livestream during a sexual encounter with another woman, which the plaintiff claims embarrassed her and led her to distance herself from Sharpe. The lawsuit also alleges that Sharpe began overwhelming her with phone calls, prompting her frequent departures from Nevada. A subsequent event in October 2024 is described, where Sharpe allegedly forced the plaintiff into a car, took her home, and coerced her into performing sexual acts.

Further allegations include an event in January 2025, where Sharpe purportedly entered her apartment under the guise of delivering a Christmas and birthday gift. Once inside, he allegedly assaulted her again, insisting on unprotected intercourse. Responding to these accusations, Sharpe’s attorney, Lanny Davis, unequivocally denied the claims. Davis labeled the lawsuit as an extortion attempt, asserting that the relationship was consensual. Davis highlighted explicit text messages from the accuser, claiming they demonstrate a “broader pattern of graphic, sexual communications initiated by” the accuser. Davis insists, “Mr. Sharpe categorically denies all allegations of coercion or misconduct \u2014 especially the gross lie of ‘rape’ \u2014 and will not submit to what he sees as an egregious attempt at blackmail.”

Davis stated that Sharpe is ready to fiercely defend his innocence in court, seeking a fair trial and judgment grounded in the facts and the law. The plaintiff, represented by high-profile attorney Tony Buzbee, is seeking $50 million in damages. Buzbee, known for handling cases against notable figures like Sean “Diddy” Combs and NFL player Deshaun Watson, expressed his support for Jane Doe. “It takes a great deal of courage to stand up against those with power, fame, and money,” Buzbee said, affirming his intention to pursue the case aggressively in court.

Despite these legal challenges, Sharpe’s legacy as an accomplished NFL player with the Denver Broncos and Baltimore Ravens, along with his post-retirement success as a media personality, remains intact. His podcast Club Shay Shay continues to gain popularity, and there are talks of a potential lucrative contract as reported by Front Office Sports.
