The herald of Galactus has made a dramatic entrance.

Julia Garner, known for her roles in “Ozark” and “The Wolf Man,” shines as the Silver Surfer in Marvel’s freshly released trailer for “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” which premiered this Thursday morning.

Garner had previously hinted at this moment in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, playfully stating, “I’m guessing that this Silver Surfer is going to be really shiny.” Indeed, she was right.

In the trailer, she presents herself to the formidable team of Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic (Pedro Pascal), Sue Storm/Invisible Woman (Vanessa Kirby), Johnny Storm/Human Torch (Joseph Quinn), and Ben Grimm/The Thing (Ebon Moss-Bachrach). Silver Surfer issues a dire warning: “Your planet has been marked for death.”

This means only one thing: Galactus, the cosmic entity she serves, portrayed by Ralph Ineson, is on his way to consume Earth.

Well, their Earth, to be precise. As revealed in an Entertainment Weekly cover story, the Fantastic Four originate from a reality apart from that of the Avengers, standing as the only superheroes of their world.

The trailer offers tantalizing glimpses of Galactus, but his full appearance remains cloaked in mystery. “I didn’t want Galactus to be just a motion-capture figure. My vision was for someone to actually step into the role,” director Matt Shakman explained to EW. “We crafted an elaborate costume and conducted various photographic tests to ensure the scale feels right. It’s like filming Mount Rushmore.”

As Silver Surfer and Galactus make their approach, Sue and Reed discover they are expecting a child – astute comic fans might guess who. “This is my doing. I stretched the fabric of space,” Reed, whose powers allow him to stretch his body, reflects in the trailer. “And they heard.”

“The Fantastic Four: First Steps” hits theaters on July 25. Check out the trailer above.
