Sunday’s WNBA lineup offers one of the season’s most exciting battles: the Indiana Fever, fronted by the talented Caitlin Clark in her second year, will challenge A’ja Wilson and the Las Vegas Aces, who boast two championships in the last three years.
Though Las Vegas dominated all four encounters last season, the stage this year is set for a thrilling first meeting of 2025, with both teams arriving under very different circumstances.
With a revamped squad and a new head coach, the Fever are emerging as serious contenders for the title. Their 6-6 record (4-3 when Clark plays) places them third in BetMGM’s odds to win the WNBA Finals, only behind the defending champions, the New York Liberty, and last year’s runners-up, the Minnesota Lynx.
Building on an impressive rookie year, Clark averages 19.9 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 8.7 assists per game, with a shooting accuracy of 41.7% overall and 35.5% from three-point range. She’s already notched a triple-double and recently led a victory against the Liberty with 32 points, eight rebounds, and nine assists, marking New York’s first defeat after a 9-0 streak.
The Fever are assembling their team dynamics, yet they’ve already secured a place in the 2025 Commissioner’s Cup final, an event that often forecasts postseason triumph. In 2023 and 2024, the Cup finalists also faced off in the WNBA Finals.
Conversely, the Aces (5-7) are experiencing their slowest season start since Wilson’s debut in 2018. While Wilson has been off the court for some games due to a concussion, deeper issues linger. Once formidable, Las Vegas now falls in the league’s lower half for both offense and defense and has suffered multiple losses by 20 points or more. Jewell Loyd, a six-time All-Star, finds herself with an 11.5-point average, struggling to find her footing.
Nevertheless, Wilson continues to excel beyond expectations. As a three-time MVP and two-time Defensive Player of the Year, she leads the Aces in points, rebounds, blocks, and steals per game, underscoring her crucial role.
Returning from a concussion incurred on June 11 against the Los Angeles Sparks, Wilson contributed 20 points and a team-best of 14 rebounds in Friday’s loss to the Seattle Storm.
The Fever and Aces are set for two more face-offs following Sunday, with Indiana hosting the contests on July 3 and 24.
