The grand stage of sports is set in New Orleans this Sunday as Super Bowl 59 takes the spotlight at the Caesars Superdome. The Kansas City Chiefs face off against the Philadelphia Eagles in a showdown for the ages. Clearly the talk of the town, Kansas City is on the brink of history, striving to become the first team in the Super Bowl era to clinch the title three years in a row—after already making history with three consecutive trips to the championship game. Their formidable foe, who holds the key to halting this ambitious quest, is none other than the Eagles, looking to settle the score after a bitter Super Bowl 57 loss to Patrick Mahomes and his squad two years back in Glendale, Arizona.

A crucial element in the Chiefs’ potential victory is a powerful start, a strategy that has frequently eluded them in past Super Bowls. In their last four appearances, Kansas City found themselves trailing—10 points behind the 49ers as they headed into the fourth quarter before managing a comeback win, a staggering 21-6 at halftime against Tampa Bay which ended in defeat, down by 10 against the Eagles at halftime in the first face-off, and trailing by a touchdown at halftime last year against San Francisco. Despite overcoming deficits in three of these four intense games, the current challenge introduces a game-changer: Saquon Barkley. Philly’s “secret sauce” in this face-off lies in Barkley, the Offensive Player of the Year, who boasts over 100 rushing yards in nine of his last ten outings.

Reflecting on the AFC Championship, where Buffalo deviated from their successful run strategy against the Chiefs in the second half—potentially costing them a Super Bowl spot—Philadelphia aims to avoid the same fate. They plan to lean heavily on Barkley throughout, and should they secure a late lead into the third or early fourth quarter, anticipate a hefty reliance on Barkley that could spell trouble for the Chiefs’ defense.

For Patrick Mahomes, establishing an early lead is crucial, pressuring Philadelphia to rely on their passing game to catch up. Exploiting vulnerabilities in the Eagles’ secondary is vital, but Mahomes needs protection. Enter left tackle Joe Thuney. Originally playing inside guard, Thuney was transitioned to tackle after challenges with younger linemen and injuries to veteran D.J. Humphries. His first three games in this position went without allowing a single sack against giants like Myles Garrett and T.J. Watt. While Mahomes faced a career-high 36 sacks this season, only one occurred in his last three regular season matchups. Criticism followed after the playoff against Houston where Mahomes faced three sacks and eight hits, but Thuney stood tall thereafter, preventing the Bills from laying even a finger on him. Now, as he gears up for his fifth Super Bowl, a win would see Thuney join the ranks of Tom Brady and Charles Haley as one of the few to capture five rings, provided he gives Mahomes the vital protection he needs.
