INDIANAPOLIS – It’s not often you see an athlete blaze through a 40-yard dash at the NFL scouting combine only to seem disappointed with their performance.
For Texas wide receiver Isaiah Bond, that’s exactly what unfolded on Saturday.
Bond clocked an official 4.39 seconds in the 40-yard dash, with unofficial times displayed at the Lucas Oil Stadium crowd as 4.40 and 4.41 seconds. Despite this speedy run, it fell short of Bond’s prediction the day before, where he ambitiously claimed he would surpass Xavier Worthy’s record of 4.21 set last year.
Worthy, who also hails from the University of Texas, was picked by the Kansas City Chiefs at number 28 in the 2024 NFL draft held last April.
“Tomorrow, I’m breaking that record, no doubt,” Bond confidently stated on Friday. “I’m planning to clock in at 4.20 or, if everything clicks, I might even hit 4.1.”
When asked on Friday about what sets him apart from other receivers in his draft class, Bond emphasized: “My speed is unparalleled. There’s no receiver with the same speed and skill set that I have. But it’s more than just speed; I’m a well-rounded wide receiver with outstanding route-running. Anyone watching the tape can see that.”
Bond mentioned that his personal best during training was 4.23 before the combine, and he’s currently ranked as the No. 10 wide receiver on Mel Kiper Jr.’s latest Big Board for ESPN.
Isaiah Bond’s performance was tied for the ninth-fastest among receivers on Saturday. His Texas teammate, Matthew Golden, outstripped peers with a blazing 4.29 seconds, marking the top time among wide receivers tested that day. Bond shared the ninth-place spot with Iowa State’s Jaylin Noel, while seven out of the top ten receiver times hailed from the SEC.
During the past season against UTSA, Bond reached speeds exceeding 22 mph. He concluded the 2024 season with stats that include 34 catches, 540 yards, and five touchdowns.
