At Wilmer-Hutchins High School in Dallas on Tuesday, a chilling incident unfolded as three individuals were shot, triggering a massive police presence and evacuation of the campus. Dallas Fire-Rescue’s Jason Evans confirmed the details to WFAA.

Initiated by an active shooter alert just after 1 p.m., emergency teams rushed to the campus situated on Langdon Road near Interstate 20 in Southeast Dallas. According to Dallas Fire-Rescue, they received the dispatch call at 1:06 p.m.

Dallas ISD officials released a statement confirming police response to the shooting. By 1:45 p.m., the situation was reported neutralized, and by 2:15 p.m., the campus was declared secure based on information shared with WFAA.

Evans reported that four individuals were hospitalized: three aged between 15 and 18 with gunshot wounds, and another potentially grazed by a bullet. Their injuries range from non-life-threatening to serious, noted Evans.

Initial reports from Dallas Fire-Rescue indicated one victim sustained a leg injury and was stabilized, though specifics of his condition were not immediately disclosed.

Authorities have reportedly identified a suspect, yet they remain at large.

In aerial footage, a throng of police cars, fire trucks, and ambulances converged on the parking lot area, while numerous students fled across the school lawns.

The students were eventually led to safety at the bleachers near the football field and track facilities.

Parents and guardians were directed to Eagles Stadium on Langdon Road to reunite with their children, with district officials advising to bring photo identification.

Reunification was completed by 4:50 p.m., according to officials.

“This is a challenging time, and we ask for your understanding,” the school district stated. “Counselors are on hand to support those in need.”

What happened during the Wilmer-Hutchins High School shooting?

WFAA interviewed a woman whose two sons attend the high school, both of whom alerted her to the unfolding events.

“It’s a terrifying ordeal for any parent,” she expressed to WFAA’s Jobin Panicker.

Another account came from a witness whose sister informed her via text about the frightening chaos, recalling three gunshots in the cafeteria.

“They were the last to escape, wiping away tears amidst screams,” she confessed.

One mother recounted receiving a reassuring call from her daughter attending the school before losing phone contact.

“I’m just anxious to be sure she’s unharmed,” she told WFAA.

Dallas Mayor Pro Tem Tennell Atkins expressed despair for the school district, showing gratitude for the emergency responders’ swift actions, ensuring the school’s safety.

A Look Back at Wilmer-Hutchins High School’s Previous Incident

Tuesday’s event echoes a concerning pattern. A previous April 2024 incident at Wilmer-Hutchins resulted in injury after a student smuggled a gun past security measures.

Officials admitted failures in the security protocol that saw metal detectors and bag checks improperly managed, prompting heightened retraining initiatives.

Another focal point was the slow reunification process, justified as necessary for verifying the proper release of students to their families.
