Tragedy Strikes Dominican Republic as Nightclub Roof Collapse Claims Lives

At least 15 people have tragically lost their lives following the collapse of a nightclub roof in the Dominican Republic, officials reported on Tuesday. Over 100 individuals were rushed to hospitals in ambulances after the devastating event at the Jet Set nightclub located in Santo Domingo, as shared by the national police on Instagram. The National District’s search and rescue teams are still diligently working to locate survivors amongst the debris on Tuesday morning, according to Juan Manuel Méndez, the head of the Emergency Operations Center.

The unfortunate incident happened on a night when renowned Dominican merengue artist Rubby Perez was scheduled to perform, the club’s Instagram posts revealed. President Luis Abinader promptly visited the scene on Tuesday to oversee the ongoing rescue efforts and to express his sympathies to those affected. Video footage disseminated by the police captures his presence at the site.

Santo Domingo’s Mayor, Carolina Mejía de Garrigó, expressed her profound sorrow over the tragedy, saying, “Our city awakes to a horrifying disaster at the Jet Set nightclub. My heartfelt condolences go out to the families anxiously waiting for news of their relatives.” She conveyed this message in a statement on X.
