Six individuals perished when a helicopter plunged dramatically into the Hudson River, not far from Jersey City, New Jersey, near Manhattan’s West Village, on Thursday afternoon. New York’s Governor, Kathy Hochul, shared this heart-wrenching news.

“Six innocent souls have lost their lives, and we offer our prayers for them and their families,” Governor Hochul expressed her condolences.

Among the victims, at least two adults and three children, believed to be a family of Spanish tourists, were rescued from the chilling waters and rushed to nearby New Jersey hospitals, yet tragically, none survived. Reports indicate that the helicopter’s pilot, presumed to be the sixth fatality, also died in this catastrophic incident.

The crash occurred around 3:15 p.m., with the helicopter hitting the water near a ventilation structure above the Holland Tunnel.

Additional Details:

  • Witness and Video Accounts: Video footage captured the helicopter spiraling uncontrollably and crashing at a terrifying speed. Mandy Bowlin, a witness on a Circle Line tour boat, recounted hearing an explosive sound behind her as the helicopter spiraled downwards. The rotor detached, causing the helicopter to nosedive into the river, flinging debris dangerously close to the boat.
  • Flight Route: Details about the helicopter’s departure location and its intended destination remain unknown. It’s common for tour helicopters to operate over the river, offering views to sightseers from heliports based in Lower Manhattan and New Jersey. Government sources note that the river’s average temperature this time of year is approximately 45 degrees.
