At least 24 individuals have lost their lives after armed assailants targeted a group of local tourists at a well-known scenic location in Indian-administered Kashmir, officials revealed to the BBC.

The assault occurred in Pahalgam, a charming town in the Himalayas frequently dubbed as “India’s Switzerland.” The region’s chief minister, Omar Abdullah, described the attack as “much larger than anything we’ve seen directed at civilians in recent years.” Many people have been reported injured, with several in critical condition.

Global leaders, including US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and EU chief Ursula Von der Leyen, have condemned the attacks.

“Deeply disturbing news out of Kashmir. The United States stands strong with India against Terrorism,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

Von der Leyen labeled the Kashmir deaths as a “vile terrorist attack,” while Putin offered his “sincere condolences” for the aftermath of a “brutal crime.”

In response, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who hastened his return from a trip to Saudi Arabia due to the incident, assured that the culprits would “be brought to justice.” He asserted, “Our resolve to fight terrorism is unshakeable and it will get even stronger,” in a statement on X.
